Constable died in scuffle: SSP Imphal West

Imphal, February 23, 2010: The recent incident of death of a constable and injury of a Sub-Inspector happened when the injured SI protested against the inebriated misbehavior of two unknown youths who entered a hotel at North AOC owned by one Sujata, a statement of the Senior SP, L Kailun of Imphal West district police asserted today.

Clarifying on the incident which was reported in some newspapers published in Imphal that mob had lynched cop and injured SI over a brawl, the SSP stated that on February 21 at about 7.30 pm, SI Sagolsem Suresh left Imphal Police Station for home.

On the way, he dropped at North AOC to meet his friends, and while he was having dinner at a hotel owned by one Sujata at about 8.45 pm, two unknown youths entered the hotel in an inebriated condition and misbehaved.

SI Suresh asked them to behave themselves and when they did not pay heed to him, a scuffle broke out.

In the scuffle, SI Suresh sustained injuries, the SSP stated in his press clarification.

On receiving information about the fight, a team of Imphal PS rushed to the spot and found SI Suresh sustaining blunt injuries on his body, and also found the constable, Thomas Kamei of Imphal PS in a serious condition a little distance away from the spot.

Both of them were evacuated to hospital.

But constable Thomas succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

SSP Kailun further stated in his press release that constable Thomas was absent from Imphal PS a day ahead of the incident, since the morning of February 20 and his whereabouts was not known to the police till he was found on the day of the incident.

During the course of investigation into the case registered with Imphal PS, two persons who were involved in the scuffle with SI Suresh have been arrested and they are under active investigation, the statement added.
