Bishnupur District Congress Committee president Waikhom Maipak was shot at and injured by two armed persons who identified themselves as activists of the proscribed KCP-MC near his Oinam Mamang Leikai residence in the intervening night of March 11 and 12. 60-year old Maipak suspected bullet injuries on his neck, right chest and hand.

He was immediately rushed to RIMS Hospital for treatment.

He is said to be out of danger.

According to family members, before being shot at, the two armed persons entered the house and requesting for spending the night.

When the request was turned down, the two armed persons insisted on escorting them to the nearest house of the councillor of the Oinam Nagar Panchayat.

Accordingly, Maipak was coming out along with his wife.

As they were approaching Oinam Lairenkabi area, the armed persons prevailed upon the wife of Maipak to go back and arrange some clothings and water for them.

However, not long after that, she heard gun shots.

Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh and MPCC president Gaikhangam have visited the injured Maipak at the RIMS Hospital.

A statement issued by MPCC general secretary Bidyapati Senjam has strongly condemned the incident of firing attack and causing injuries of a senior Congressman like Maipak.

Describing the attack as an act of cowardice, the MPCC statement asserted that the family members should have been informed about the mistakes, if any committed by him, before being shot at.

After the attack, security measures have been stepped up and additional police personnel deployed in the ward where the injured Congressman is being treated.

It may be recalled here that there have been past instances in which the proscribed outfit KCP (MC) hurled and exploded bombs at the Congress offices of Bishnupur, Thoubal and Imphal East Districts.

On the other hand, unidentified gunmen reportedly opened three rounds of firing at the Heirangoithong Jaganath Leirak residence of Loitongbam Tilotama Devi, who is the president of Manipur Pradesh Youth Congress Committee on the night of March 12.
