Imphal, January 24 2009: Coming out strongly against the incident of leaving a hand grenade by some unidentified armed persons at Little Master English Higher Secondary School, Samurou while the mid term test for the class XII was underway on January 22 morning, Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has asked the UG group responsible to come out with an explanation in this regard at the earliest possible.

Addressing a press conference in this connection at its head office here today, education secretary of the student body Arambam Thoithoi said that the act of leaving the hand grenade was in violation of the resolution adopted during the mass rally cum public meeting of the students, teachers, academicians and general public held on July 5, 2008 at Imphal urging for making education a free zone.

DESAM strongly condemned such act of intimidation by armed UG groups on educational institutions and the student community in particular which has come about even as the public are protesting against the excesses of the security forces on the innocent people, Thoithoi said.

Monetary demand from schools and colleges should be stopped at once and no UG group should exert pressure on the principals for meeting such undue demands, Thoithoi said, while calling up the teachers as well to stay away from indulges in contract works.

The student body has also demanded the Government to take special measures to ensure the protection of the students.

It may be noted here some armed persons who identified themselves as members of the proscribed KCP allegedly left the hand grenade that it should be handed over to the school principal on January 22.The incident has come about after around 2 months of receiving a telephone call from the outfit demanding the principal to pay Rs 5 lakhs.
