Housewife escapes grenade attack

Imphal, March 18 2009:: A housewife had a providential escape when a hand grenade hurled by unidentified persons exploded at a house in Langol Ningthou Leikai under Lamphel Police Station in Imphal West District at around 9.05 pm yesterday.

According to report, the grenade landed and exploded near the kitchen of the house being resided by one Salam Manglemba (45).The house is located just next to the Pinewood View School.

Originally hailing from Thanga Salam Leikai, Manglemba is a personnel of 7th MR and staying as a tenant in the house belonging to one S Ibopishak of Achanbigei who is an Engineer in the Yurembam Power House.

When the grenade exploded on the side of the kitchen constructed separately from the house, wife of Manglem identified as Memchoubi Devi was sleeping on the bed placed inside the kitchen room.

Memchoubi escaped unhurt although the grenade exploded just 2 metres away from the bed she was sleeping.

But one empty LPG cylinder, two 200 litre capacity water storage tanks which were kept inside the kitchen and another 2000 litre capacity water storage tank kept outside suffered damage from bomb splinters.

The wall of the house, the kitchen, the roof covered with CI sheets and other utensils kept inside the kitchen also suffered damage in the explosion.

In protest against the last night's bomb attack, people of the area today staged a Wakat Meepham.

Talking to mediapersons, Manglemba informed that he had not received any monetary demand or threat from any person or UG group.
