Security on alert for UCM's protest

Imphal, October 15: Leaving no room for errors the State Government has put security on full alert to meet any eventualities during the proposed five day mass protest called by the United Committee Manipur from tomorrow.

The UCM is demanding a clarification from the Central as well as Manipur Government on the status of the NSCN (IM) ceasefire.

UCM had also reiterated demand for restoration of pre-merger status in case the NSCN (IM)-GoI ceasefire agreement was extended to Manipur.

The decision to launch the agitation was taken at a Leaders' Meet yesterday.

According to DGP S Bimalchandra security forces have been deployed at various vulnerable areas from tonight itself to curb any eventualities likely to breach public tranquility.

No form of mass protest would be allowed at this particular juncture by any organization, asserted the DGP when The Sangai Express contacted the police chief today.

Final strategy of controlling possible mob violence and unwanted development in the back drop of the UCM's protest call would be taken after assessing tonight's situation, he affirmed informing services of para-military forces including CRPF and Assam Rifles would be utilized.

Informing that strict vigil and vital information are being gathered from vulnerable trouble spots, Bimalchandra said despite adequate availability of security forces for controlling unwanted consequences, arrangement for security reinforcement has been made while district police stations concerned and posts have been intimated to be ready for any eventualities.
