Two shot dead, four arrested

Imphal, May 11 2009: Troops of 29 Assam Rifles gunned down two underground activists during an encounter at Lamayang today.

In connection with the incident, a statement issued by the PRO Assam Rifles said that based on specific input regarding the presence of militants in general area of Lamayang, troops of 29 Assam Rifles of 26 Sector under HQ IGAR (South) launched an operation early morning today.

At about 5.50 am, two individuals were moving towards the troops.

On challenging by the troops, the individuals opened fire and tried to fleeing taking advantage of thick foliage.

The troops came out to the flank of the militants and eliminated to of them.

Two 9 mm pistols with magazines, four live rounds of 9 mm pistol, three Chinese made hand grenades and two IEDs have been recovered from the possession of the slain UGs whose bodies have been handed over along with the recovered items to Tengnoupal Police Station.

On the other hand, Imphal West Police Commandos have arrested two KCP activists from different parts of the district yesterday.

According to a statement issued by Senior SP of Imphal West District L Kailun, the KCP activist identified as RK Shivakanta alias Shiva (40) s/o RK Homendro Singh of Sagolband Tera Sapam Leirak was arrested from Nagamapal area at around 4 pm yesterday.

On spot verification, Shivakanta disclosed that he is working under one Panthou who is the project in charge of KCP.

Two live rounds of point 45 ammunition and one mobile handset of MBM with SIM card were seized from his possession.

On the same day at about 6.15 pm, acting on credible information Imphal West District Police Commandos also arrested another KCP activist from Kakwa area.

The arrested KCP activist has been identified as Laishram Shanta alias Tomba alias Panthou (49) s/o late L Modhu of Kakwa Laiphrakpam Leikai.

On spot verification, Shanta disclosed that he joined KCP (Lamphel) in September 2004 through one Ahanthem Boy of Khurai Sajor Leikai and he was assigned to serve demand letter s to Imphal Hospital, Langol View Clinic, Agriculture Department, PWD, Minor Irrigation Department and Manipur University for party fund of KCP, the SSP informed, adding that three live rounds of point 4 ammunition have been seized from his possession.

ON the other hand, based on specific information regarding presence of PULF cadres in general area of Yairipok, troops of 34 Assam Rifles of 9 Sector under HQ IGAR (South) launched operation and apprehended on PULF (Umar Farooq) cadre at around 5 pm yesterday, according to a statement issued by PRO Assam Rifles.

Identifying the arrested PULF cadre as Md Ziauddin (45) s/o late Hasha of Yairipok Singga, Thoubal district, the PRO informed that two demand letters have been recovered from the possession of the arrested PULF cadre.

The arrested PULF cadre has been handed over along with recovered item to Yairipok Police Station at around 6.30 pm yesterday, the PRO added.
