Imphal, January 04: The basic purpose of the Union Home Secretary VK Duggal's visit to the State recently was not to review the law and order situation of the State but to work out poll strategy for the Congress party, charged BJP MLA M Bhorot.

Speaking to reporters at the BJP office today, Bhorot alleged that though the Home Secretary was on an official visit to review the law and order situation in the State, the real purpose of the visit was to work out strategies so that Congress candidates can win in the Assembly elections.

Taking serious note of the refusal of the Home Secretary to meet BJP representatives during his stay at Imphal, Bhorot construed that VK Duggal leaving Imphal after meeting only the Chief Minister without meeting leaders of other political parties was a clear indicator that his visit was basically to chalk out plans for the Congress party.

Taking part in the press meet, BJP National General Secretary Thawarchand Gehlot who arrived at Imphal today termed the incidents of removing party flags and sign-board from the party office recently as most unfortunate.

To a query, Gehlot informed that the list of BJP candidates would be announced in phase-wise manner before the election notification is issued as the polling has also been scheduled in three phases.

He said that screening of prospective candidates were under process.

BJP State unit president Dr Haobam Borbabu disclosed that the party had studied the prevailing situation in relation to the forthcoming elections during a meeting of election management committee which was also attended by Thawarchand Gehlot.

The meeting decided to constitute a new 9 member election committee with himself as president, said Borbabu.
