Imphal, September 02 2009: In protest against the killing of a passenger bus driver by unidentified miscreants at Phoubakchao Ikhai along Imphal-Churachandpur road, passenger services have been suspended on the stretch today.

Ngasepam Basanta alias Ngongo of Nambol Thangtek Mamang Leikai, driver of the passenger bus, Sidaba Mapu, was shot dead by unidentified gunmen at the area last night.

Imphal-Churachandpur Road Bus Owners and Workers' Association and Tiddim Road Drivers' Union in a joint meeting condemned the killing.

A memorandum has been submitted to Chief Minister O Ibobi after due deliberations with All Manipur Road Transport Drivers' and Motor Workers' Union.

Demanding the punishment of the culprits, the memorandum pressed the Chief Minister to set up a police out post at Phoubakchao Ikhai.

The memorandum also demanded security provision from the place to Churachandpur for transporters.

Pressing for an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh to the family of the deceased, the representation also urged the Chief Minister to provide a Government job to a family member of the victim.

The drivers would go for a cease work strike if the demands are not fulfilled within two days, the memorandum cautioned.

Meanwhile, people blocked road at Nambol and Malom areas using tree branches denouncing the incident.

However, the agitating locals were dispersed by police and the barricades were cleared.

Basanta's body is still lying unclaimed at RIMS morgue.

He is survived by his wife and two daughters.
