Imphal, December 24 2008: Hardly had people of this landlocked State heaved a huge sigh of relief following suspension of the separate bandhs enforced respectively by Senapati and Sekmai based organisations, commuters faced severe inconveniences albeit on a lower scale as road blockade was imposed along the Mayai Lambi route today. The agitation on the inter-district road is being enforced by the JAC constituted in the backdrop of killing of Moirangthem Ibomcha Singh of Shamurou Awang Leikai, who was Principal -in-charge of Haoreibi High School, on December 22 night. However, the JAC decided to call off the agitation from tomorrow morning following an assurance from the Chief Minister to look into all aspects of the bodys demands. A JAC delegation accompanied by the Wangoi assembly constituency MLA Salam joy called on the Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh later in the day following which decision to call off the bandh was taken. The Chief Minister is informed to have assured to track down the assailants at the earliest, tighten security measures in between Chandranadi and naorem Leikai, ex-gratia payment to family of the deceased and Government job offer to next of kin of Ibomcha. O Ibobi also condemned the killing of the Government employee. Earlier in the day, with the people of Shamurou area vehemently protesting and tension reported to be very high against the killing, vehicle operators particularly passenger carriers opted for safety by ceasing service as the bandh was enforced from the early hours today. As the route passes through Shamurou area no vehicles could be seen traversing past this section of the road even as suspected bandh supporters converged at Shamurou bazar area from early morning and barricaded the route by felling trees and burning tyres/debris.

Even though Wangoi PS personnel fanned out of their station to clear the rou-te and douse the fire there was no vehicular movement till late afternoon.

Later as preventive measures, police commandos attached to Wangoi police along with women police stayed put at Shamurou Bazar to foil attempts of violent acts.

nev- ertheless Samurou public persisted with their agitation by enforcing the bandh at places where there were no security personnel.

A sitin-protest was also was staged by the local womenfolk at Samurou Bazar.
