Heirok incident remembered

Imphal, March 24 2010: The Heirok incident of 2008 in which three youths including two girls were killed in indiscriminate firing by some activists of an underground group and blinding another girl during Yaoshang festival on March 24 of the year was tearfully remembered today.

Offering floral tributes to the photographs of the victims of the incident, Th Romen, Th Premila and L Nirmala, all from Heirok, marked the day which was observed as "Enlightening Day" by the villagers.

RPN Memorial Trust organised the annual observance function like every year since 2009 .

MLA of Heirok A/C M Okendro, Imphal East SP, Th Radheshyam, Professor Dr N Nanakishore of RIMS took part in the function.

Hundreds of people of Heirok also took part in the function.

Commanders of three units of the Special Police Officers (SPO) founded for the first time following people's demand also presented gifts to W Rebika, who has been blinded by the injury she sustained in the firing.

On the occasion, mother of SP Th Radheshyam and his wife Bijayalaxmi also presented financial assistance of Rs 5000 each to the families of the three victims and to the visibly handicapped, Rebica.
