SFs slay four militant suspects

Imphal, March 10 2009: Four UG suspects have been slain in three different incidents of gun fight with security forces today where an NCO of Assam Rifles also sustained injuries.

Two persons suspected to be cadres of the proscribed UNLF have been killed in an encounter with a combined security team at Mayang Imphal Yangbi in Imphal West district this morning.

According to police sources, the encounter ensued when a combined team of Imphal West commandos and troops of 12 Maratha Light Infantry, acting on a specific information about presence of UG cadres, moved in Mayang Imphal Yangbi.

The encounter took place at a vacant spot locally known as Tera Kachin, about 9 kms South-West of Mayang Imphal police station.

From the two UNLF suspects slain in the shoot-out, one sten carbine with magazine and three live rounds, one 9 mm pistol and six live rounds with magazine and a hand grenade were recovered, conveyed the source.

Police have picked up the unidentified corpses and deposited at RIMS mortuary, said hospital sources.

The second incident of shoot-out took place near Haijang village located about 7 kms East of Kangokpi sub-divisional headquarters in Senapati district at about 2.40 pm.

During the shoot-out between troops of 36 AR and unidentified UG suspects, one UG suspect was slain while an NCO of Assam Rifles sustained bullet injuries, said Senapati SP NK Ujjwal.

After the shoot-out, AR troops conducted search operation in the area till late evening.

There has been no report of any recovery of weapons or further exchange of fire.

A police team from Kangpokpi police station have also moved into the area.

Earlier in the day, at about 7.45 am, another UG suspect was shot dead by troops of 29 AR at Maringthel.

According to a press release issued by the PRO of HQs IG AR (S), troops of 29 AR, acting on specific information regarding movement of armed UG cadre in Maringthel area, launched operation and laid multiple ambushes in the area.

At about 7.45 am, the troops observed movement of one individual with weapon.

On being challenged to stop, the individual tried to escape away.

But the troops retaliated and eliminated the suspected militant.

One M 22 rifle with magazine, 60 live rounds, one ammunition pouch, three grenades and IED have been recovered from the slain individual, further said t he press hand-out.
