Imphal, April 08: Public outcry against the alleged sexual harassment meted out to Maibam Naobi Chanu by Thoubal police commandos in their custody has taken a larger dimension with womenfolk expressing serious apprehension about their predicament in a conflict situation like Manipur where the law enforcing agencies have become law breaker.

Womenfolk who participated in a Wakat Meepham (protest session) at Kwakeithel Bazar today said excesses committed on Naobi by the police commandos is another manifestation of State sponsored terrorism.

With security forces who are there to protect the lives of the people not able to identify their own mothers, sisters and daughters and the State Government remaining insensitive to the plight of the womenfolk, many more Naobis would fall victims to the harassment of security forces, the women protestors expressed apprehension.

The protest jointly organised by Meira Paibi bodies of three localities made it cleared that the State Government should put a rein on activities of police commandos, so that womenfolk could live in peace in a secured environment.

If the Government cannot protect its people from the excesses of the security forces and pulled up the guilty police commandos involved in violating the feminine chastity of Naobi, the Chief Minister and his Council of Ministers should stepped down immediately, the protestors demanded.

The protestors further announced that if there were any police commandos from Kwakeithel area who were among those involved in the Naobi's case, they would be expelled from the locality.

Expressing similar sentiments, protest session were also held at Kwakeithel Lamdong Leikai under the aegis of Yaipha Thourang Nisha Bandh Nupi Marup, at Awang Konjeng Leikai under the aegis of Awang Konjeng Leikai Women's Welfare Association, at Kwakeithel Makha Konjeng Leikai under the joint auspices of Meira Paibi of the locality and the Manipur Young Association as well as Konjeng Langpoklakpam Leikai Keithel Macha under the aegis of Konjeng Langpok-lakpam Leikai Nupi Samaj.

At Heirangoithong Bazar, members of Chingamakha Yanglem Leikai Women Welfare Association and Heirangoithong Bazar Area Women's Social Welfare Association staged a Wakat Meepham from early morning till late evening today.

Placards and banners with slogans demanding befitting punishment to the guilty police commandos, resignation of Chief Minister and his Council of Ministers and termination of Thoubal CJM from service were used at all the protest sites.

On the other hand, the Women Alert Forum, Leimarol Leishem Yaipha Thouram Kanna Lup, Chaokhat Thourang Nupi Kanglup and Meitei Presbyterian Singlup have condemned the attempt made by some security personnel to rape a young married woman at Ningthoukhong yesterday.

In a joint statement, these organisations said that the incident has yet again confirmed that the security personnel do not have any moral at all.
