NCP open to alliance: Sangma

Imphal, February 05: Claiming that NCP is being supported by CPI (M) and MPP in constituencies where the two parties have not fielded their candidates, former Lok Sabha Speaker PA Sangma disclosed that NCP is open to alliance with political parties including the ruling Congress party.

He said that NCP was not bound by any hard and fast rule as far as political alliance is concerned.

Addressing a press meet at the Thangmeiband office of Nationalist Congress Party, PA Sangma reiterated that the party is fielding 27 candidates in the 9th Assembly election.

A coalition Government led by NCP would come up in Manipur after the elections, he predicted with a voice of hope.

Even as the party is supported by CPI (M) and MPP in certain Assembly constituencies where the candidates of the two parties are not in fray, there is no such thing that the party would not ally with Congress to form the next Government, said the former Lok Sabha Speaker.

He further remarked that Congress president Sonia Gandhi addressing election meetings in Manipur would not make any difference to the State Congress.

Contrary to the principle of Congress party that development would follow peace, NCP believes that development should precede peace, Sangma stated.

Strong police or military actions and harsh laws and Acts cannot guarantee peace, he observed while declaring that the State Assembly would adopt a resolution to repeal Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act 1958 in its first sitting in case NCP is elected to power.

A resolution in the State Assembly to repeal AFSPA assumes greater significance because it may help the Prime Minister repeal the Act from Manipur, Sangma noted.

Significantly no political parties have struck up any pre-poll alliance, with even the CPI and the Cong going to polls separately.
