One shot dead, Jail Warder hurt

Imphal, March 31 2009: The first Chairman of the Autonomous District Council Ukhrul was shot dead by suspected NSCN (IM) cadres near his own residence at Ukhrul town last night.

On the other hand, one Warder of Sajiwa Central Jail has been shot and injured by an unidentified youth this morning.

According to information received by press, the deceased is identified as Kathing Jagoi (67) of Phadang village but staying at Ukhrul town.

At about 7.30 pm yesterday, three suspected cadres of NSCN (IM) shot dead Kathing, about 15 yards from his house located at Rayotang in Ukhrul town about 1.5 kms West of Ukhrul police station.

Although the motive of the killing and identity of the killers could not be confirmed yet, it is suspected that the man was killed by NSCN (IM) cadres for having nexus with the armed group MNRF.

He was also a executive member of the Tangkhul Naga Long for a long time.

Kathing sustained two fatal bullet injuries on his chest.

The corpse has been taken to his native village Phadang after post mortem at Ukhrul CHC Warder Haobijam Khunjao (50) s/o Yaima of Palace Compound was shot by an unidentified youth who came on a motorcycle (Yamaha) on the road leading to the jail complex at about 9.20 am.

According to police sources, the youth followed Khunjao who was coming to the jail on a scooter before shooting him.

The assailant also punched the Warder with the butt of his gun.

Khunjao who hailed from Keibul Lamjao but shifted to Palace Compound sustained bullet injuries on the left shoulder and back.

Two other bullets also grazed through the right arm and wrist.

He is undergoing treatment at JN Hospital.

The assailant was found waiting for the Warder at Kangla Lamkhai.

There the youth asked Khunjao to halt but he rode past the youth.

The youth pursued Khunjao and shot him on the road leading to the jail complex, added the source.
