Imphal, March 26 2010: A 14 year-old boy sustained injuries when a handgrenade exploded in unexplained circumstances this late evening near the NRL Oil Pump at Singjamei Mayengbam Leikai under Singjamei Police Station.

The injured boy, identified as Thongam Jekojit, son of Th Indrajit of Singjamei Mayengbam Leikai, received splinter injuries in his left thigh and right cheek.

He has been admitted to RIMS Hospital for treatment.

The bomb exploded while the boy was walking with his mother to fetch firewood from their house to a hotel which his mother runs.

The incident took place on the eastern side of the median of the NH-39 about 10 feet away from the NRL Pump.

The bomb exploded no sooner had a convoy of three vehicles of security force heading towards Imphal from the southern direction passed the spot.

It is believed that the grenade might have been hurled by an unknown insurgent at the convoy.

It may be recalled here that around the end part of last year, 2009, a grenade attack on the security force took place in front of Singjamei Super Market within a distance of half a kilometre from today's blast site injuring at least five persons including two security personnel.
