One shot dead, four UGs held

Imphal, March 21 2009: Assam Rifles troops claimed to have gunned down one UNLF cadre in a shoot-out on March 20 in 'general area Laibi' while State and para-military forces apprehended five underground activists from different parts of the State since yesterday.

A PRO IGAR (S) release issued today informed of 29 Assam Rifles launching an operation in Laibi (Chandel district) during which an individual was spotted moving suspiciously at about 7.50 pm of March 20. On being challenged the suspected UG fired shots but got killed in retaliatory action by the AR troops.

Identifying the slain as Pvt (No 2252) Boboy Singh alias Khundaba of the UNLF, the PRO release listed one 9 mm pistol, two magazines, 10 fired cases, six live rounds, a diary containing details of 241 Bn UNLF as items recovered from the deceased whose body has been handed over Tengnoupal police station today.

The release further informed of 28 AR troops arresting one PULF (MI) Khan cadre from 'general area' Makha Leikai identified as Mustak Khan (20) s/o Salowar Khan today and of 12 AR nabbing two KNA cadres from kamjong area on March 20.The KNA cadres have been identified as Thanglei (23) and Seikhohao (18) - both from Chassad.

While the Mustak has been handed over to lilong police station today, the KNA cadres were handed over to Imphal West district police station, the PRO added.

Thoubal district police commandos arrested two UG cadres from different locations today.

In the first, the police commandos rushed to Heirok Part-I, Heitupokpi on receipt of report of presence of UG elements in the area at around 5:30 am.

The police team arrested one PREPAK cadre identified as Ningthoujam Samananda Meitei (26) s/o Sobha of the same locality in the search operation.

A release of the Thoubal SP Clay Khongsai claimed Samananda to be an active member of PREPAK working in the finance section of the outfit.

The release further added that the district police commandos arrested one UNLF cadre during frisking drive at Arongthong.

The cadre has been identified as Ningthoujam Nanda Singh (25) alias Malemnganba s/o Angou of Sambram Makha Leikai.

On questioning, the captive disclosed that he is an member of the proscribed UNLF working in the finance section, the release added.
