Bandh cripples Thoubal district

Imphal, June 13 2009: Burning of tyres and logs along the Thoubal district section of the National Highway-39 and massive protest demonstrations at Kakching sub-division areas marked the first day of the indefinite bandh enforced from today in denunciation of the killing of one Yengkhom Krishnadas of Kakching Sumak Leikai.

While the JAC formed to protest murder of the contractor had given the State-wide agitation call its impact was most evident in Thoubal district areas particularly in Kakching sub-division from where the victim hailed.

Owing to the bandh call shops and business establishments and educational institutions in Pallel, Thoubal district headquarters and Kakching remained shut while bandh supporters blocked traffic at various points of the Imphal-Moreh route.

It is reported that impact of the bandh call was also felt at Moreh town even as protest demonstrations were staged at Moreh Town, Kakching Bazar, Sora, thoubal and Tengnoupal.

Y Krishnadas (42) was found dead at Lilong Chingjao area yesterday, two days after he was abducted from his wife's residence in Thangmeiband Khomdram Selungba Leikai.

Family members claimed that the captives had taken Rs 25 lakhs as ransom amount with an assurance to release Krishnadas alive.

Meanwhile, the kakching-based JAC in a release issued today informed that the Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh has been apprised to track down and punish perpetrators of the criminal act.

Asserting that there would be continuous agitation until the culprits have been apprehended and punished, the JAC also affirmed body of the deceased would not be claimed till the murder case is resolved amicably.

The JAC has also convened a meeting of representatives civil society organisations tomorrow at 10.30 am at Kakching to discuss further course of action.
