Lamsang set to boycott polls, 24 Hrs bandh called today

Imphal, April 01 2009: Enraged over the killing of alleged innocent civilians by security forces, people of Lamsang Assembly constituency have resolved to boycott the upcoming 15th Lok Sabha elections.

The people arrived at this resolution asserting that three suspected KCP (MC) cadres shot dead by Thoubal police commandos at Ikop Pat, to the west of Tentha in a reported encounter yesterday morning were innocent civilians.

Meanwhile, the JAC constituted in connection with the killing has called a 24 hours NH-53 bandh with effect from 5 am tomorrow.

The three youths killed in the encounter were Kangabam Netrajit Meitei (18) s/o Ibocha, Kangabam Brajamohon Singh (18) s/o Lakshman and Henam Sanachouba Meitei (19) s/o Inaocha.

All of them belonged to Karong village within lamsang A/C under Patsoi police station.

They were innocent youths helping their parents and augmenting family income by working as labourers.

They left their homes in the afternoon of April 8 to collect their wages.

A public meeting held in connection with the triple killing was held at Karong Young Union Club ground.

The meeting attended by a large number of people from Kachikhul, Maklang, Leitong and Sangaithel also constituted a joint action committee.

The meeting decided to urge upon the Government to punish the security personnel involved in the killing, institution of a judicial enquiry and to put an immediate halt to the alleged trend of killing innocent people.

A large number came to the Chief Minister's office to submit a memorandum listing their demands today.

However, they were blocked by police at Keishampat bridge.

Later, a team of JAC representatives were allowed to proceed and call on the Chief Minister.

The JAC decided to launch different forms of agitation until and unless its demands are fulfilled.

It further resolved to boycott the upcoming Lok sabha elections within its jurisdiction.
