Grenade explodes at Radhabinod Koijam's residence

Imphal, January 06 2010: Residence of former chief minister, Radhabinod Koijam was rocked today when suspected undergrounds exploded a bomb at the gate of the residence, causing injury to two persons including an escort cum house guard personnel of the opposition leader of the state Assembly and president of the NCP state unit.

Meanwhile, a lathod bomb was also discovered today from inside the campus of a private school in Imphal east district in another unrelated incident.

The bomb at the residence of the former Chief Minister at at Thangmeiband Lourungpurel Leikai was exploded at about 4.45 pm.

A rifleman detailed as escort cum house guard of the former Chief Minister and a domestic helper of the family sustained injuries by the impact of the hand grenade.

The injured rifleman has been identified as Khumanthen Debendra (25) a resident of Yairipok Yambem.

He is among the personnel of 7 MR detailed as escort cum house guard of the opposition leader.

He received splinters injuries on the eyebrow and was immediately rushed to the RIMS hospital.

His condition is stated to be not serious.

A domestic worker at the house also reportedly received minor injuries which did not require medical attention.

According to the senior SP, L Kailun of Imphal west, two youths coming on an Activa Honda lobbed the bomb and they made good their escaped in the same Activa Honda they come in.

The bomb exploded inside the residential complex.

As the bomb blast took place some distance away from the sentry post of the residence, he escaped unhurt but caused injuries to a rifleman who was inside the barrack and watching TV there, the SSP added.

The SSP personally inspected the spot and took stock of the situation.

Police also launched a search operation to find out the attackers but there were no reports of any suspect being picked up.

Radhabinod, who was at home at the time of explosion, strongly condemned the act of the suspected undergrounds.

He further blamed the government stating that the attack was carried out with ease as government has not provided adequate security to him.

The security personnel strength given to him will always find ithard to face up to such criminal acts, he observed adding that miscreants carried out the attack taking advantage of the shortage of security manpower.

On the other hand, a lathod bomb was discovered from the campus of the Mega School, Yaralpat under Porompat police station of Imphal east on the side of Tinsid road today.

Police said the bomb was found lying in the campus today at about 11 am.

The same was disposed off by a team of state police bomb disposal squad at about 1 pm.
