Imphal, April 20 2009: Following the attack on the house of a journalist who is also the general secretary of the All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU) by armed miscreants Sunday, the local residents of Bashikhong in Imphal East District of Manipur staged a protest Monday.

During the protest the locals displayed banner and placards like "stop gun culture", "we condemned shooting at populated area", "we condemned shooting at the house of scribe", etc.

The shooting incident was also strongly condemned by the AMWJU and the Editors' forum.

According to reports, the shooting incident at the residence of the AMWJU General Secretary, Y.Biren, took place Sunday evening around 7:15 at Bashikhong in Imphal East district when armed miscreant fired several rounds from the gate of the residence.

However, no damage or injuries was inflicted.

The reports further said the AMWJU secretary was not at his residence at the time of the incident.

The reason behind the attack still remained unclear as so far no organization or individual has claimed responsible.
