Imphal, June 09 2009: The Threatened Indigenous Peoples' Society (TIPS), Manipur has condemned the detention of some students of Manipur University including a DESAM leader, Arambam Thoithoi under NSA in connection with the killing of Prof Islamuddin.

Urging the government to release the arrested students unconditionally, publicity Secretary of TIPS, K Birachandra, stated that the incidents are the results of the apathy of the state government and the MU authority to act on time.

Saying that it is not only violation of students' right to life, the statement also noted that the government is posing a great threat to the students.

It shows that the government is not seriously considering the students' efforts to transform the society to the path of development, it added.

Pointing out the lawlessness in the state, the TIPS statement also noted that the government has bemired the rule of law and breached the security of life.

It stated that it will not be the right step to break the nerve of the students, who are putting their efforts to bring quality education in the state.

The ever rising insurgency related problems, and the lack of restrictions on various social evils are the proof of the government's worthlessness.

The government has rendered the people as the victim of sorry state of affairs in education sector, it observed.

The fact that the government is victimising the champions of quality education in the state instead of endorsing the efforts of the students could be established when the government detained students under NSA, the statement pointed out.

The statement further went on to say that passing the buck to some students after the KYKL had claimed that Prof Islamudding was killed by the outfit and the subsequent reports that IRB personnel were involved in the incident is not the right step.

It added that it is an invitation to unrest.

It noted that it is a violation of students' right to education, and holding the weaker responsible.

The TIPS statement further urged the government to release the students unconditionally and to reach at a solution without any delay.
