One AR killed, 6 hurt in MPA's attack

Imphal, April 15 2009: A jawan of Assam Rifles killed and at least six other including a JCO and havildar when troops of the 12 Assam Rifles was under heavy attack from the rebels suspected United National Liberation Front (UNLF) early Tuesday at interior Ukhrul district.

Army sources said that the attack on the troops was conducted at a place at Kangpat under Chasad police station in the interior Ukhrul district today morning at around 7.30 am when the troops are moving from its battalion headquarter at Kasom to Nambisha village where a post of the battalion located.

All the six injure personnel have been evacuated at Leimakhong Army Hospital here by helicopter.

Among them the JCO named B Basumara from Kolkata (West Bengal) was stated to be serious.

Other injure jawans were identitfied as rifleman Kutwant Singh (24) of Punjab, havildar Bhupendra Kumar (41) from Bihar, BR Chickamba (26), T Sema (28) from Dimapur (Nagaland) and Rajkumar (32) from Nepal.

The identity of the slain personnel has been established as Rifleman Nokjar (26), son of Imtaven of Mokokchung, Nagaland.

He died at the spot.

Police source from Ukhrul reported that the incident took place when the troops on a convoy moving from the battalion headquarters towards its post was ambushed by the rebels taking position at the hilly terrain area.

There were no report of taking away of the weapons but it added that taking advantage of the thick forest of the hill, rebels escaped in no directions.
