'Free students' cry hit high pitch

Imphal, May 29 2009: Students in different part of the State today staged protest demonstrations and took out protest rallies decrying the action of the police in arresting many student leaders following the assassination of Proctor of Manipur University Prof Md Islamuddin by armed cadres of the proscribed KYKL.

Placards inscribed with slogans like 'we condemn police action of arresting student leaders', 'Students should not be looked upon as UGs', 'Make education a free zone', 'Don't create fear psychosis among the students', 'Help in maintaining a conducive academic atmosphere', 'We condemn killing of Prof Islamuddin', etc were seen at the sites of the demonstration.

The sites of the protest demonstration include Standard Roberth English School at Canchipur, Learning of Temple at Singjamei Naorem Leikai, Iboton Model High School at Lakshmi Bazar, Government Primary School at Top Siphai, The Dawn Public High School at Yumnam Huidrom, St John English High School and The Bethel English High School at Nambol Chingmang and Mukta Institute of Education at Mongsangei.

After the protest demonstration, students of St John English High School and The Bethel English High School took out a protest rally at Nambol while the students of Standard Roberth English School at Canchipur area.

Meanwhile, teaching and non-teaching staff members of Manipur Institute of Technology have condoled the sad premature demise of Prof Md Islamuddin, Proctor of Manipur University and former Dean of Students' Welfare by observing two minutes silence in respect of the departed soul during a condolence meeting held at the Institute on May 27 .
