Condemnations pour in, Jagat leads the way

Imphal, May 25 2009: Condemnations from different quarters have poured in to decry the assassination of the Prof Islamuddin inside Manipur University campus today.

Joining numerous civil society organisations, in condemning the killing, Governor Gurbachan Jagat expressing grave concern, observed that the law enforcing agencies must exercise utmost vigilance so that such incidents are not repeated in future.

He also appealed to all sections of the society to come together and share the grief of the family of the deceased, and also to resolve to stand firmly against such criminal acts.

The Governor urged all concerned to reject violence of any form and work towards achieving peace and progress in the State.

Gurbachan Jagat also conveyed his heartfelt condolence and sympathy to the bereaved family of the Professor.

Lok Sabha MP Dr T Meinya has also strongly condemned the killing of the Professor.

Condoling the death, the MP said that he also shares the grief and pain of the bereaved family members.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister O Ibobi called an emergency Cabinet meeting of his Council of Ministers in connection with the killing today.

The Chief Minister in a press statement said that such act of cowardice will not deter the people of Manipur but will strengthen further their determination to make the State a peaceful place to live in.

MLA Th Shyamkumar also condemned the killing of the Professor.

The MLA in a press statement said that his demise is a great loss to Andro A/C as well as to the students and people of the State.

Manipur University Teachers' Association (MUTA) in an emergency meeting condemned the killing.

The association also shared grief of the family of the Professor.

The meeting noted that Prof Islamuddin's dedication and commitment to the University and students community was amply demonstrated by his acceptance of the crucial but academically non-rewarding responsibilities of the Dean of Students' Welfare as well as the position of Proctor.

The meeting further observed that the brutal killing cannot be the handiwork of people who have any concern for the academic and intellectual growth of the State.

Another emergency general body meeting of the association will be held on May 27 at the conference hall of the Mathematics Sciences Building of the varsity.

Manipuri Students' Federation (MSF) while condemning the killing demanded the concerned to clarify on the killing.

MSF president Md Atabuddin while speaking to reporters at its office this afternoon said that the students' body has taken a serious note of the killing of the Professor, who took active participation in developing human resources in the State.

Maintaining that the killing of a person who tried hard to change the University into a 'peace zone' terrorises the students and teachers, Md Atabuddin asked the armed individuals to stop killing innocents immediately.

Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) while condemning the killing said that the students' body takes the incident as an act which is against people's demand of making education a 'free zone'.

While urging the concerned to clarify on the killing DESAM pressed the State Government to book the culprits.

Condemning the incident All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) asserted that the perpetrators should have informed the students' community even if the Professor had any guilt.

Maintaining that such violent activities would bring fear psychosis in the University campus, AMSU urged the concerned not to repeat such act within the campus of any educational institution.

AMSU also shared the grief of the bereaved family.

Communist Party of India (Marxist) Manipur State Committee, United Committee Manipur (UCM), National Identity Protection Committee (NIPCO), Manipur University Tribal Students' Union, All Colleges Tribal Students Organisation, Manipur University Muslim Students' Union, All India Students' Federation, Development Organisation Andro Kendra, Minuthong Telipati Development Committee also condemned the killing.
