Imphal, July 19 2009: Demanding a white paper on the accusations of the State against the student activists being detained under NSA, in connection with the murder of Prof Islamuddin, within three days, the DESAM said that there would be no change in its decision to launch various other forms of agitation.

In case the Government comes up with an explicit white paper within the deadline set, DESAM would call off its agitation with immediate effect, said a press release issued by the student body.

The course of protest movement lined up DESAM include imposition of curfew in Government offices, prohibition on lending out tents and other materials for Government related functions, prohibition of water supply by water tankers to the homes of Ministers, MLAs and high-ranking officials.

In case the student activists are not released even after this course of agitation, a state of emergency would be declared and all schools and colleges would be shut down, it conveyed.

Referring to the statement of Chief Minister O Ibobi that there were reasons for detaining the student activists and that the reasons could not be spelt out at the moment, DESAM questioned the implications of the Chief Minister's statement.

The Chief Minister's statement amounted to condoning the guilty persons while indicting innocent students, it claimed.

Further reacting to the statement of DGP Y Joykumar in an exclusive interview with NE TV on July 18 that DESAM is a frontal organisation of the proscribed KYKL, the DESAM asserted that statement was aimed at maligning the image of civil society organisations of Manipur.

It was a manoeuvre made to ban DESAM, it alleged.

It also demanded concrete evidence on the alleged connection between DESAM and KYKL.

DESAM also conveyed gratitude to all who supported its general strike.
