JAC, Govt strike agreement

Imphal, December 15 2008: With the State Government responding positively to the demands of the JAC constituted against the killing of Seram ongbi Shanti, the JAC and the Government have struck an agreement.

JAC members met Chief Minister O Ibobi and submitted a memorandum containing a charter of demands tonight.

Seram ongbi Shanti (50) was shot dead by KCP (MC) at the courtyard of her home right in front of her family members at about 8.30 pm yesterday.

Shanti was secretary of the Apunba Nupi Lup of nine villages of Nongren and surrounding areas.

She was also secretary of both the Nongpok Leimarol Apunba Meira Paibi Lup and the Nongren Meira Paibi Lup.

In connection with the killing, a public meeting was held at Nongren this morning during the JAC against the killing of Shanti was constituted.

The demands of the JAC put to the Chief Minister in the evening include fitting punishment to the culprits, provision of ex-gratia before Shrada ceremony of late Shanti and stringent arrangement to instill sense of security in Nongren area.

After listening to the demands, the Chief reportedly Minister assured to consider the demands favourably.

With regard to the killing, Lamlai police have registered a suo motto case and started investigation.

It is reported that the police have recovered empty cases of AK and pistol ammunition from the spot of the killing.

Talking about the last night's incident, Shanti's son, Raju (28) said that he and a neighbourhood friend were coming back after seeing off another friend when they were stopped by unidentified armed persons near their residential gate.

They questioned Raju and his friend where they were going.

To this, Raju pointed to his home.

Immediately, they started thrashing him severely.

Raju and his friend were allowed to go later.

On reaching home, Raju was telling his parents about armed persons thrashing him.

At the moment, two unidentified armed persons barged through the back door.

Three other armed persons were also found standing near the front door.

After calling out all the family members to the courtyard, they asked whom among them was Shanti.

"To this, my mother told them she was Shanti and all others were her son".

"In the next moment, one of the unidentified persons wielding small arm shot my mother without saying anything.

Then another wielding automatic rifles shot my mother again", recounted Raju.

Soon after they hurried away firing in the air all along, he said.

Although Shanti was immediately rushed to JN Hospital, she succumbed to the injuries on the way.

Raju further asserted that there was no case of any monetary demand or intimidation from any UG group to their family.

He said that his mother had no connection with any UG group.
