Slain duo confirmed as Myanmarese brothers

Imphal, November 15 2008: The two alleged UG suspects who were shot down by troops of 31 Assam Rifles yesterday near border town Moreh of Indo-Myanmar boundary have been confirmed as two Myanmarese brothers today.

Assam Rifles claimed that both of them were killed in the retaliatory firing.

AR officials, however, said that they have not received any official intimation on the report of the slain duo being Myanmarese Nationals.

According to information received by the press, the two slain Myanmarese brothers have been identified as Letkhanhao Vaiphei (29) and his younger brother Khupthenkham Vaiphei (25) .

Son of late Paoneithang Vaiphei, both were residents of Namphalong in Myanmar but staying in Moreh Ward No.3 .

In connection with the incident, a joint meeting of officials of both the neighbouring countries was held at Moreh today. The meeting was attended by District Chairman of Peace and Development Council, Tamu (Myanmar) Aung Oo, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Moreh T Hopeson Chothe, Immigration Officer N Rameshore and SDPO Moreh.

Along with claiming them as their citizens, Myanmar officials also condemned the killing and asked their Indian counterparts to hand over the bodies which are currently lying at the mortuary of RIMS Hospital here.

The two bodies are likely to be handed over to Myanmar authorities tomorrow.

However, the postmortem examination of the bodies would be conducted here or not has not yet been finalised.

On the other hand, State police sources maintained that an investigation into the Friday shoot out incident is underway but the identity of the two slain persons have not yet been confirmed.

Apart from other necessary reports, the finger prints of the slain have also been taken, the police sources said.

Meanwhile, relatives of the two slain Myanmarese brothers reportedly came to the mortuary today and identified them.

Mobile tower attacked: One BTS tower of the cellular phone service provider Aircel installed at Wangkheimayum Leirak, Wangkhei under Porompat police station of Imphal East district was targetted by some unidentified persons who lobbed an explosive device today at about 6.45 pm.

The tower was installed inside a private residential compound.

However there is no report of any casualty.
