Nungba rallies for free and fair poll

Imphal, February 15: A silent peace rally was taken out in Noney area of Nungba Assembly Constituency today demanding restoration of a conducive atmosphere to guarantee free and fair polling during the 9th Manipur Legislative Assembly elections scheduled on February 23. The rallyists after taking part in the peace march held from 11 am and crossing through Tupul to Rangkhong village before congregating at Noney sub-divisional headquarters for a public meeting was organised by Zeliangrong Taan Pui Phuam, Longmai area.

A memorandum was also submitted to the district magistrate/district Election Officer urging the Government to take all necessary measures for protecting the citizens in exercising their democratic rights.

Mentioning that the peace loving people would firmly unite to defend the harmony of the land, the meeting also resolved to appeal to all section of the society and organisations concerned to neither threaten the electorates nor indulge in undesired activities that could eventually create social divisions.

Insistence on letting the people join the electoral process in a fair manner and condemning alleged intimidation by the UNC as well as violent activities of some individuals claiming to be UNC supporters against the innocent electorates were the other highlights of the resolution and content of the memorandum.

Over 3000 people joined the rally.
