Talk fails, corpse lay unclaimed at morgue

Imphal, December 14 2008: With the talk over the killing of Maharabam Rajen (40) of Awang Sekmai unable to arrive at any understanding, the JAC has mooted launching various sorts of agitation without claiming the corpse.

Rajen was shot dead by unidentified persons at his Awang Sekmai Khunou Mathak residence last night.

Against the killing, a joint meeting of Awang Sekmai local clubs and Meira Paibi organisations was held this morning.

After the meeting, a joint action committee was also constituted.

Later, the JAC representatives met the Chief Minister and submitted a memorandum.

While disclosing police record about Rajen having connection with one UG group, Chief Minister O Ibobi, nevertheless, assured the JAC members that the killing will be investigated.

Peeved at the Chief Minister's response, the JAC refused to claim the corpse.

They also discussed on their course of agitation.

During the meeting held in the morning, the killing of Rajen was condemned in the strongest manner.

It further decided to appeal to all concerned not to repeat such killings in Awang Sekmai area ever again.

While urging upon the Government to find out the culprits and punish them, the meeting appealed to the Government to extend ex-gratia to the bereaved family.

Asking all UG groups to clarify on the killing by December 17, the JAC urged upon the Government provide correct information about the killing.

The meeting resolved not to claim the corpse until these demands are fulfilled.

It also decided to launch various forms of agitation in case the demands go unfulfilled within the deadline.

All the demands and resolutions of the meeting were conveyed to the Chief Minister through a memorandum in the evening.
