Imphal, February 14: Over eighty percent polling was recorded in the first phase polling in 40 valley constituencies in four districts today.

The polling was by and large peaceful with no major poll related incidents of the violence being reported.

The highest voter turnout of a staggering 97.42 percent was reported from 19-Patsoi Assembly constituency.

As many as 18 constituencies reported above 90 percent.

The lowest percentage of 58.40 percent was reported from Thangmeiband A/c followed by Lamlai A/c with 59%.The total number of registered voters in the 40 constituencies is 8, 89,231.Break up of voters turn out in all the ACs are not available at the time of filing this report.

Almost all the shops and business establishment in four hill districts remained closed.

Passenger vehicles including inter district buses stayed off the roads.

No major incident occurred in the vulnerable Nambol constituencies in Bishnupur district where an underground organization had imposed ban on MSCP candidate Th Bira.

The voting was peaceful except for an attack on a polling station in Jiribam where 72.8 percent voters turned out to vote.

No re-poll has been recommended, our correspondent reports.

A brief exchange of fire ensued between security personnel and unidentified gunmen after the latter fired some rounds at Sotobekra polling stations, reports said.

Security personnel were again engaged in an encounter after they were attacked by gunmen while transporting ballot boxes.
