One lynched to death, accomplice hurt

Imphal, February 10 2009: One out of two persons, who showed up at the Wabagai Tera Urak residence of Zonal Education Officer (Kakching) Mayengbam Kumar (50) in connection with extortion of money, had been lynched by the locals with the other accomplice seriously injured in the thrashing and undergoing treatment at hospital in critical condition.

As per police report, the two showed up at the ZEO's residence, which is under Kakching police station, at around 7.20 pm yesterday and whipping out a small arm threatened the Officer to cough up the demanded amount.

Hearing the commotion, the locals rushed in and apprehended the two after which they were beaten up consequently leading to the death of one.

Even though a Kakching police station team arrived at the trouble spot and managed to take custody of both one succumbed to the thrashing before reaching RIMS hospital.

The police identified the deceased as one Moirangthem Premchand alias Swamikumar (20) s/o M Tombi Singh of Arong Khunou Awang Leikai and the injured as Maibam Inao (22) s/o M Shamu of Keirak Tomal Makhong.

Inao, initially brought to RIMS Hospital has been shifted to JN Hospital, Porompat in a critical condition.

Police recounted that last night's public thrashing at Kumar's is the second incident of its kind after an November 10 skirmish last year wherein unidentified gunmen opened fire at his residence.

Kumar reportedly received extortion note from a KCP group that insisted on percentage cut from the salary of the employees serving under the Kakching Zone of Education Department.

Swamikumar, is informed to have left home for Keirak Tomal Makhong about a month ago to assist in the marriage ceremony preparation of his cousin sister (aunty's daughter).

The mapam chakkouba of the newly wed falls tomorrow, added family sources.

Meanwhile, a well attended public meeting held this after at Wabagai Tera Urak community hall resolved, among others, to prohibit entry of non-locals (outsiders) into Wabagai Tera urak area after dusk.

Apparently apprehending backlash from the armed group, the meeting also decided to unitedly deal with/tackle those who attempt to create trouble or cause harm to the villagers, members/volunteers to stay vigil from 6.30 pm till 6 am so as to enforce the entry ban decision and to take appropriate action against those family in case shelter is provided to stranger/s.
