New Delhi, November 04 2008: Top police officials from the North Eastern States will hold a meeting with Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil in New Delhi tomorrow to review the emerging security threat in the region, a senior police official told news agencies today.

The Home Minister will chalk out a fresh security strategy to deal with the terror threat from across the border and within the States, the official said.

The meeting, to be attended by DGPs of the North Eastern States, including Intelligence officials, will review the overall security scenario in the region vis-a-vis the recent serial blasts in Assam, Tripura and Manipur.

"The meeting will discuss the threat posed by jihadis spreading their tentacles in the North East, especially those operating from Bangladesh, with active patronage from Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence and Bangladesh's Directorate General of Forces Intelligence,'' a senior official, who wished to remain anonymous, said.

Other issues include the "new linkages'' of United Liberation Front of Asom, Kamatapur Liberation Organisation and All Tripura Tiger Force with Bangladesh-based Harkat-ulJehadi-e-Islami.

"Strengthening of intelligence gathering and sharing amongst different States and Central security agencies would be another key agenda,'' he said.

"The intelligence gathering and sharing network amongst different security agencies in the region was found wanting.

Therefore, discussion would be held to formulate a suitable mechanism for better coordination,'' the official said.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who had visited the blast sites in Assam, said his Government will not go soft on terror nor compromise on terror.

He assured 'effective' steps to combat terror.

Meanwhile, the proposed two-day annual security review meeting of North East DGPs and IGPs, scheduled to be held in Shillong on 6th to 7th November, has been cancelled. State DGP Y Joykumar today left Imphal for New Delhi for the scheduled meeting.

The North East States have been ravaged by violence in recent times.

Earlier some time back bomb blasts ripped through Agartala though the exact number of death tolls could not be confirmed. Before the Assam serial blasts on October 30, a powerful bomb blasts at Ragailong in Imphal on October 21 had left 17 people dead while injuring scores of others.

Earlier the residence of the Chief Minister was also attacked with a bomb.
