UT prisoner found dead

Imphal, February 02 2010: A cadre of the proscribed KCP-MC (Lamyanba Khuman group) was found dead in his bed in the security award of JN Hospital, Porompat today morning.

According to police report, he was admitted to the hospital for treatment as an under-trial prisoner.

But he was found dead in bed no.4 of the security ward, which was allotted to him at around 6 am today.

The deceased has been identified as Okram Deben (33) s/o late Tombi of Langthabal Kunja.

He was also known by the assumed names like Puranthaba alias Kumar alias Boy alias Kokphai alias Arnold alias Saphaba.

After being arrested by the security forces on June 27, 2007, Deben had been lodged in Sajiwa Central Jail.

For the second time, he was admitted to the same hospital for treatment on November 24 last year.

Prior to that he had been hospitalised for the injuries he sustained during a clash among the prisoners in the jail.

According to family members, his wife and elder sister were the people who visited Deben in the hospital for the last time yesterday.

There were also two more UTPs in the same room of the ward.

Police have not given any comment on the possible causes of his death.

Nonetheless, it pointed out that Deben had some psychiatric problem.

Meanwhile, the body of Deben has been handed over to his family members after post-mortem examination at RIMS today.

Deben left behind his wife, four daughters and one son.
