Imphal, August 01: Works Minister Gaikhangam today informed the House that illegal constructions have come up at numerous 'Government quarters including one at the Chief Minister's official bungalow but added that the matter is sensitive and could lead to social problems and tension if the illegal constructions are pulled down without due thoughts.

Replying to a question raised by Moirang AC MLA S Gopal during question hour, the Minister said that at present 16 Churches have come up at the Government's quarters located at Lamphelpat.

Above this, 19 Churches at the Government quarters located at Langol and three at National Games Village have come up.

To a further question, Gaikhangam said that it is illegal to construct permanent structures at Government quarters adding that all the structures were built without the concurrence of the State Government.

Gaikhangam also added that one such place of worship has been constructed at the official bungalow of the Chief Minister.

The place of worship at the CM's residence was built during the tenure of W Nipamacha.

Though instructions have been given to the authority concerned to remove the illegal places of worship from Government quarters, the issue is sensitive and involves religion, and hence actually implementing the order may give rise to social upheavals, said the Minister.

Gaikhangam appealed to all the occupants of Government quarters to realize their responsibilities and act accordingly.

Bottled water: To a question raised by Thangmeiband AC MLA Meinam Bhorot, Health Minister Dr Chaltonlien Amo today said that there is no firm producing mineral water in Manipur though there are firms producing packaged drinking water.

The Minister informed the House that there are five firms engaged in the business and added that their products are not mineral water but packaged drinking water.

Altogether the five firms produce seven different brands of bottled water, he added.

Samples of the bottled water are sent regularly to food analysts at Guwahati and the brands, Loktak, Bailley and A One Directors' Special have all been certified fit for human consumption, added the Minister.

The results of the other samples sent to Guwahati are being awaked, said Dr Amo.
