Two killed, six nabbed

Imphal, June 12 2009: At least two suspected underground activists killed by the state police commandos at separate places of the state today.

Six including two suspected women underground activists were also nabbed by the security forces.

One of the suspected militants was killed by the Imphal west police commandos in an alleged encounter at Chingmeirong Mamang Leikai at around 11 am while the other one was gunned down by the Imphal east police commandos tonight at around 8.45 pm at Top Khewa bazaar under Porompat police station.

The slain man is suspected to be a cadre of a hill base militant group by the police who also claimed nabbing of two women suspects in a follow up operation.

The incident is said to have occurred in front of Arun Enterprises at about 11:30 a.m.According to police source, the killing of a suspect at Khewa Bazar occurred when the police commando personnel on frisking and checking duty ordered to stop a youth coming on a Yamaha motorcycle.

Instead of getting positive response, the youth opened fired towards them in which they retaliated and in the ensuing encounter, he was killed, police said adding that one 9 mm pistol and a mobile handset recovered from the slain suspect.

The dead body has been deposited at RIMS morgue for identification.

With regard to the killing of other suspected cadre of hill based militants, police said that the incident took place when the police commandos, upon receiving information from reliable sources about the presence of some hill based militant cadres moving around Chingmeirong area in relation to monetary collection, came to the spot and tried to stop the cadres.

The militant cadres, however, started firing towards the police commandos and in retaliation one of them was killed while another escaped the scene.

Police also arrested two female suspects, added the police.

The identity of the slain cadre, who sustained three bullets, was yet to be identified at the time of filing this story.

However, police said the victim could be of a hill based militant outfit of the state.

Police also recovered a 9mm pistol, three live rounds and another five empty bullets from the slain.

The corpse has been deposited at the mortuary of Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal.

Meanwhile, in an unrelated incident, Imphal West police claimed to have arrested four cadres belonging to various outfits of the state Friday.

A statement of senior superintendent of Imphal West district police, L.Kailun, stated that police commandos of the district arrested a cadre of the proscribed Revolutionary People's Front/People's Liberation Army (RPF/PLA) from Sanakeithel supermarket, assigned to extort money from the area.

He has been identified as Mayanglambam Khelendro Singh, 30, s/o M.Radhamangol of Kakching Khullen Turel Wangma in Thoubal district currently staying at Lamphel supermarket in Imphal West in a rent.

Based on his verification, another cadre of the same outfit identified as Khangembam Jiten Singh, 35, s/o Kh.

Chaoba Singh of Kumbi Lal Sandang Mamang Leikai.

The SSP also informed a combined team of Imphal West district police commandos and 12th Maratha Light Infantry arrested two cadres of People's Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK) from Tera Sapam Leirak in Imphal West.

They were identified as Thokchom Tondon Singh, 34, s/o Th.Angou of Sagolband Sayang and Thokchom Romio, 33, s/o (L) Th.Kendramani Singh of Sagolband Pukhrambam Lierak of Imphal West.

The SSP, L.Kailun informed they were assigned to kidnap an executive engineer of Tera Sapam Leirak and that a 9mm pistol with three live rounds were recovered from their possession.
