RIMS massacre of 1995 remembered

Imphal, January 07 2010: The RIMS massacre in which nine civilians including medical students of the then RMC was remembered today on its 15th anniversary.

People offered floral tributes to the victims on the occasion.

On this day in 1995, CRPF personnel deployed at the then RMC now re-christened as RIMS shot dead nine persons who were in the campus in the aftermath of undergrounds attack on them.

Auto drivers, students of the medical college were the victims of the cruel firing incident.

The remembrance function held at the memorial site of the incident was organised by the RIMS Firing Victims Memorial Day Observation Committee.

MLA L Nandakumar, former vice chairman of Manipur University, IS Khaithem, chairman of the RIMS Firing Memorial Trust, N Kunjamohon and president of the Young Physic Union, M Madhumangol led the people in paying the floral tributes.

MLA Nandakumar recalled the incident of 1995 as most cruel act of the security forces meted out to the civilians.

He observed that people of the state need to know the violation of rights to life of the people in the state both by state actors and non-actors.

Chairman, N Kunjamohon observed that in the state several instant of violation of rights to life of the people by the security forces had occurred.

Firing towards people witnessing volleyball match at Heirangoithong, RIMS massacre, killing of 10 persons after they were forced to stand in a line and Kwairamband Bazar shooting at the latest, were some of the instances, he added.

The trust has started taken up steps to extend assistances to the victims of the RIMS Massacre.

The objective of the trust is to campaign for stopping violation of right to life of the people.

Killing is not the only violation of right to life but violation of right to education, right to food are also included to safeguard the right to life.

The instance of long keeping of students out of class by the class boycott stir of the students' bodies is also amount to violation of right to life.

It will be a right step to find a way to bring an amicable solution between the agitating Apunba Lup and government at the earliest, he demanded.
