Shun violence, blood-shed demand protest demonstrations

Imphal, November 14 2008: CALLING TO shun violence activities and atrocities to men by men witnessing in the state and allow living people in peace, sit-in protests were staged at different parts of the state today organized by separately by various civil organizations.

Sit-in protests were carried out at Thamnapokpi in Moirang, Kumbi Bazar in Bishnupur district and at Wabagai Bazar in Thoubal district today.

The sit-in protest staged at Thamnapokpi where villagers of villages in and around the Thamnapokpi and Moirang area participated called for end to the non-stop killing people and atrocities meted out by the state and non-states witnessing in the state.

"We want peace, we want to live in free like other human being, stop killing and harassing people," etc.

It was commenced at around 10 am and went on till 4 pm.

The sit-in protest was organized jointly by five different organizations, namely Ething Village Reformation Committee, Nungjengkhong Leikai Village Development Committee, Youth Development Organisation, Sendra Village Development Committee and Women Development Association, Naransiena under the initiative of the Sustainable Development Centre (SDC).

While speaking to the media persons, SDC, secretary L Pishak expressed concerned over the increasing killing and harassment carried out by both government forces and militant outfits.

The manners of both the government forces and militants are different from that in other parts of the globe.

As such suffering of the people is increasing day by day, he observed.

"We have been organizing the sit-in protest decrying such activities like killing and atrocities to the common people and harassment towards the women," Pishak added.

Chanabam ongbi Nandarani, secretary WDA who participated in the protest said, "Now we want to live with peace of mind even for a day." "We don't want to hear news of killing and violence incidents no more".

Moirangthem Nilamani, a social worker from Thamnapokpi said "It is human nature to live longer but people in the state apparently wanted shorter life as hope of leading a happy life loss on them" .

At Kumbi also people staged a sit-in protest decrying shooting to injure at the face of a youth of the area named Nongmaithem Basanta of Kumbi Keithel yesterday afternoon by three assailants.

In the protest which mostly womenfolk in and around the Kumbi Keithel area staged, slogans like "What fault had Hemanta committed, clarify at the earliest, we want peace," etc.

The mother of Hemanta while recalling yesterday's incident in which her son was shoot at to injure said that her son has been leading a normal life.

He had attended recruitment rally of IRB and passed the physical test.

He also demanded clarification from the concerns to the reason behind the shooting of her son.

Protestors also threatened to launch other intensify forms of agitations if they could not get any reply from the responsible group regarding the shooting.

They also informed the media that they would seek from local MLA as well as from the state authorities to help in treating Hemanta who is hospitalizing at RIMS, Imphal.

Elsewhere, another sit-in protest was also staged at Wabagai Bazar in Thoubal district in register a strong protest against the attack on house of the secretary of the Bazar board recently and against the extortion demand served by a group of militant outfit to the shops located in the Bazar.
