Constable killed in Churachandpur

Imphal, May 04 2009: A police constable, who was in the Imphal West district police commando till August 28 last year, was shot dead yesterday around 7.30pm by unidentified gunmen at a cemetery located near Molnom village along the bank of Khuga River under Churachandpur police station.

Locals were reported to have spotted a white colour four-wheeler being driven out from the place after the sound of three/four rounds of gunfire was heard yesterday evening.

The victim has been identified as Constable (9801029) Mangminlun Lhungdim (33) son of Otkhai Lhungdim of T Gelmol village in Churachandpur district.

He was transferred to Churachandpur District Police Reserved Line since August 28, 2008, according to a report.

He was said to have attended duty in his office till 1pm yesterday while no trace of him was reported since then, the report further said.

The police team headed by the Churachandpur district SP had picked up his dead body around 11 this morning after confirming the report of the locals who found the bullet riddled body, the report maintained.

He was hit by three bullets in the head.

The police have filed a case regarding the incident.

His body remains at the Churachandpur police station.

His body will be taken by the family tomorrow for the last rite, the report added.
