Death toll in Khoupum shoot out rises to five

Imphal, February 19 2009: Another cadre of PREPAK injured in yesterday's clash with cadres of the NSCN(IM) at a place located between Thangom and Betheljang village under Khoubum police station of Tamenglong succumbed to injuries last night taking the dead toll in the clash to five.

Meanwhile, the identities of two of the underground cadres killed in the clash have been established today.

At least four underground cadres reportedly died and some others injured in Wednesday gunfight erupted between the combined force of NNC and PREPAK and NSCN(IM) near a dam in Khoubum Valley in the interior Tamenglong district.

According to report received here, the injured cadre was found by a group of women who went to the clash site to intervene and stop the gunfight.

He was immediately rushed to the Primary Health Centre at Khoubum by the womenfolk.

He died at the centre at around 9 pm due to the injuries.

On the other hand, identities of two of the five cadres killed in the gunfight were established today by families.

One of the identified men was from Khurai Ningthoubung Leikai Keisham Gugu (27) son of late Doren.

According to his elder brother, the deceased Gugu has shifted from Uripok Bachasbati Leikai some 20 year back and earlier, the deceased run a courier service.

He did not know to which group he had joined since he left home.

The other slain cadre was from Lukhami Khunje village of Noneh identified as Guidinlung Golmei (18) son of Johnson.

He is suspected to be a cadre of the NSCN(IM).

The dead bodies has arrived at Imphal today and kept at RIMS morgue for official procedure.
