Imphal, February 11, 2010: Local people of Ukhongsang have resolved to launch various modes of agitation against the killing of Selungba who used to hawk gospel music albums.

Thangjam Selungba (42) of Ukhongshang, Thoubal district was found killed near Punanamei village cemetery on Pudunamei road in Senapati district last morning.

A joint action committee has been constituted during public held in connection with the killing at Ukhongsang today.

The meeting resolved to launch different modes of agitation in cases circumstances and facts about the killing are not established within three days.

It further demanded that the Government should extend adequate assistance to the bereaved family.

Saying that such incidents have occurred in the village earlier too, the JAC urged upon the Government to take up necessary measures to avoid recurrence of such killings.

The JAC said that a memorandum would be submitted to the Chief Minister for execution of the resolutions adopted in the meeting.

The meeting further decided not to claim the corpse until and unless the demands of the people are put into action.

The Government should be held a responsible for any unwanted situation arising out of it.

Speaking to media persons at RIMS mortuary today, a spokesperson of the JAC said that four natives of the village had been killed in tribal dominated areas earlier.

The villagers have been painfully bearing these acts of injustice all these days.

Saying that the unclaimed and unexplained killing has enraged the people of Ukhongshang all the more, the spokesperson recalled that Thangjam Hemanta (22), Thangjam Bishorjit (25) and Moirangthem Dhamenjit (28), all belonging to the village were killed at Kangpokpi in the early part of 2008. Another Ukhongshang native, Lisam Nimaichand (35) was killed in 2009 at Kasom Khullen.

Hemanta and Dhamen were jewellery craftsmen.

Bishorjit was a rice dealer.

Protesting against these unexplained killings of the five villagers (counting Selungba), a protest demonstration would be staged at Ukhongshang tomorrow.

Although post mortem examination of Selungbas corpse was conducted at RIMS today, the family members and the local people are refusing to claim it.
