Imphal, January 30 2010: Against the backdrop of the killing of a widow and her daughter at Phayeng Ching Khunou Nunggaban, Manipuri Students' Federation (MSF) today pointed out that lack of public's cooperation to police/government is one reason for the increasing crime rate in the state which also resulted in the failure of the government to book the culprits in the crimes.

A statement of the MSF issued by its general secretary, H Chandradhon noted that the issue of killing and atrocities against women, children, students, and civilians by security forces and miscreants has become the current affairs issue of the state.

It stated that it is most unfortunate for the society that the criminals have targeted women, children and students.

The action taken by the government in dealing the crimes is not satisfactory.

The killing incident of a widow and her daughter at Phayeng Ching Khunou Nunggaban is not only an open challenge to the people but an incident that purely disdains the existence of the students' community, it asserted.

Strongly condemning the incident, the MSF has also pledged to join and support any movement against the crime.

Manipur has become the hub of criminal activities due to the government's short-term policy in solving and addressing any issue instead of resolving issues according to the aspiration of the people, the statement contended.

The increasing crimes have prompted the presence of various JACs.

Regarding the killing of a widow and her daughter at Phayeng, the statement wondered whether the police could not even establish the culprits or they are unable to arrest the culprits.

The government should seek way for the involvement of the public in tracing the culprits involved in the crime rather than resorting to the slow tactics of tracing the culprits.

The government should declare cash reward for the arrest of the culprits, it stated while lamenting that no policy to facilitate the participation of the public in tracing the culprits.

Crimes have been preceded by another.

The people also could not carry on an agitation for a long time other than only for a given period.

This has increased the presence of many anti-social activities to take place in the state.

Severe crimes may continue to take place unless the nature of governance is altered, it cautioned.
