Bandh affects life in Singjamei

Imphal, May 21 2009: A 12 hour complete bandh in Singjamei assembly constituency in Imphal West district hit the normal vehicular movement on Indo-Myanmar route besides paralyzing the business activities of Singjamei market on Thursday.

The Joint Action Committee formed against the killing of Loitongbam Satish @ Tomba Singh of Singjamei called the bandh for alleged failure of the government to respond positively to their demands.

The bandh disrupted normal life in Singjamei sector of NH 39 and other markets from dawn to dusk.

L Satish, a resident of Singjamei Oinam Thingel was reportedly abducted by AR personnel in civvies along with one Pebam Gunindro of Haobam Marak on their way to home after visiting Satish's brother in Sajiwa Jail on May 16 .

However Satish was found killed in an alleged 'encounter' at Laikot Ching under Lamlai police station in Imphal East district on the following day which sparked protests in his locality and subsequently a Joint Action Committee against the killing was formed and launch Thursday's bandh.

Though there is no report any untoward incident during the course of the bandh,bandh supporters including womenfolks in mourning attires set on fire the effigy of Chief Minister Okram Ibobi, besides damaging a number of light vehicles which violates the Bandh.

The busy Singjamei Super Market complex and other market places in and around the entire satellite town of Singjamei wore a deserted look since dawn to dusk as none of the Imphal bound passenger vehicles passes the sector of the NH 39 .

The Committee demands punishment of the accused security men involved in the killing of Satish besides seeking clarification from the government regarding the particulars of Satish joining any militant organization operating in the state as charged by the security forces.

Meanwhile thanking the public for supporting the bandh, Convenor of the Committee Oinam Nandkishore announced to launch intense form of agitation soon as there is no positive response from the government till date.

The family members and striking committee members are yet to claim the dead body of Satish which lying at the RIMS hospital mortuary in view of the development.On Wednesday Pebam Gunindro who was abducted along with Satish was dubbed as a militant and produced before a district court and later remanded to judicial custody for 3 more days though his wife P Babita rejected the charges levelled against her husband.
