Manipur highest in violence chart

Imphal, July 08 2009: Militancy and related incidents of violence continue to be high in the Northeastern states of Assam, Manipur and Nagaland during the year 2008-09 (till May 2009), according to Ministry of Home Affairs sources.

In Manipur, such incidents rose from 262 in 2008 to 311 in 2009, while in Assam, it rose from 207 cases in 2008 to 221 in 2009 .

The PIB in a press note said that the Union government has deployed central security forces to aid the state authorities for carrying out counter insurgency operations and providing security for vulnerable institutions and installations; shared intelligence on continuous basis; gave financial aid for strengthening the local police forces and intelligence agencies under the Police Modernization Scheme (PMS) and provided assistance for strengthening various aspects of the security apparatus and counter-insurgency operations by way of reimbursement of security-related expenditure.

The sources also said that the scheme is being implemented in all states of the region except Mizoram and Sikkim.

It has also assisted the states for raising of additional forces in the form of India Reserve Battalions.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Home Affairs, government of India, has prepared and fixed targets for the Annual Action Plan for border works.

The Union Home Ministry source said, accordingly, along the Indo-Bangladesh border, 1800..09 kms of fencing and 718.64 kms.

of roads have been completed under Phase II project.

Further, replacement of 376 kms of fencing has been completed under Phase III project.

A total of 2579.22 kms of fencing and 1422.45 kms of roads under Phase II are scheduled to be completed at a cost of Rs.4393.67 crores within the year 2010, and 861.72 kms of fencing under Phase III at a cost of Rs.884 crores.

The sources also said that the installation of floodlighting works is also in progress for about 2840..90 kms at a cost of Rs.1327.77 crores to be completed within 2012 .

The construction work for additional border outposts along the Indo-Bangladesh border numbering 383 has been awarded, at a cost of Rs.1832.50 crores to be completed within 2014 .

Construction work in 10 strategic roads along the Indo-China border has been started, to be completed by 2013, the sources added.
