Imphal, October 05, 2009: A fierce heavy gun battle between a combined force of Assam Rifles and Mahar Regiment and suspected KCP(MC) cadres took place at Sungjang village where Kukis vacated some time back in Senapati district bordering with Tamenglong district early today.

KCP, Military Council (Puranthaba) group said that the gun fight was with its cadres and claimed killing of at least six soldiers of the combined force and injuring 15 others.

Sources from PIB (Defense Wing) and state police debunked the claim and said that there was no casualty on the side of the security force.

According to reports received from Tamenglong district headquarters, the gun battle took place between the combined force of 14 Mahar Regiment and 26 Assam Rifles and suspected underground cadres.

The exchange of firing started from about 7 this morning and continued till around 10.30 am.

Tamenglong police confirmed that heavy exchange of fire took place at the border of Tamenglong district and Senapati district.
