UNLF has suffered heavy casualties: Army

Imphal, November 01 2008: UNLF CADRES based in Myanmar have suffered another blow when they tried to attack a border post of 57 Mountain Division at around 8 p.m.on October 30, a PIB (Defence Wing) communique stated.

The communique further stated that the army learnt through intelligence sources that the UNLF might attack the security forces in near future.

As such a plan was prepared to trap those cadres by the Commanding Officer of the unit under the directions of the General Officer Commanding, 57 Mtn Div.

It said, the fire-fight lasted for 15 minutes during which the troops of 57 Mtn div manuevered around to trap the UNLF group and engaged effectively from a very closed range.

Two UNLF cadres were killed on the spot and the rest were able to flee leaving a large quantity of weapons, ammunitions and equipments.

The ferocity of retaliation forced the militant to flee leaving their dead and injured behind, the communique said.

It further said that during the search operation, a lot of blood trails were found entering the Myanmar border suggesting heavy casualties inflicted on the UNLF outfit.

Combing operation commenced in the morning during which lathode launchers, a huge quantity of RPG, mortar shells, small arms and ammunitions and communication equipments were recovered from the slain militants.

The well executed retaliation has caused a major blow to the UNLF which is already reeling under the pressure of security forces, the PIB (Defence Wing) communique stated.
