Bomb blasts at ex-SDPO's resident, IED defuses

Imphal, May 05 2009: Two motorcycle borne unidentified persons suspected to be undergrounds today exploded a bomb at the resident of a retired police officer causing damage to the officer's car parked nearby and some part of the house.

No human casualty occured.

Meanwhile, security forces defused an intensive explosive device (IED) found planted at place located between Toupokpi and Upokpi along Tiddim road in Bishnupur district today morning by the troops of the 5/8 Gorkha Rifles.

The same was later destroyed at the spot.

The bomb hurled by the unknowns exploded at the front courtyard of resident of a retired sub-divisional police officer (SDPO), Nongthonbam Sudhir at Khagempali Pankha under Singjamei police station in the morning around 11.10.Though no one was hurt in the blast, a car of the DSP parked at the courtyard and window glasses of the house were damaged by the impact of the blast.

A car (Maruti 800 MN-1K 2758) parked at the courtyard and utensils nearby the water tap were damaged.in the explosion.

Splinters of the blast made punctured a rear tyre of the car and utensils nearby the water tap.

At the time of blast family members were inside the house and none received casualty.

No sooner had the bomb blast, state education minister, L Jayenta who is also he circle MLA, Imphal west SP, L Kailun and his under rank police officers arrived at the spot and took stoke of the situation.

Jayenta termed the incident as unfortunate one protesting strongly on causing panic and fear to the people.

Government will take up steps from time to time to face such challenges, he assured.

The retired SDPO, Sudhir said before the incident, none of the underground organization served monetary demand on him but in the recent time there was an instant of gun firing to the house of his younger brother who is serving as joint director at the state veterinary department Dr N Dhananjoy.

Police investigation into the incident observed that the bomb was a China Make Hand Grenade.

As the house of the retired police officer is standing together with his brother's resident, police could not confirmed to whom the bomb targeted.

Meanwhile, the traffic along the national highway (NH) -150 (Tidim road) came to a halt early Tuesday morning after the police and security forces blocked the road on the discovery of a IED planted on the road at a spot located between Toupokpi and Upokpi village along the stretch of the highway under Bishnupur police station.

Troops of 5/8 Gorkha Rifles on ROP duty on the road, having detected the IED in the morning at around 6:00, stopped all kinds of traffic movement in the area for the safety of the public.

Later, bomb experts from the Gorkha Rifles defused the IED at the spot at around 7:45 a.m.and normal traffic resumed for the day.

Police could not immediately confirm which militant group planted the IED apparently targeting the security forces.
