Imphal, December 01, 2009: A possible major tragedy averted when police on time detected and defused a six kilogram weight IED on the main road to RIMS to DC office in Imphal west Tuesday morning.

Police said that the 6 kg weight IED was found planting on the road side to the main road connecting the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) and Imphal West DC office early today at about 5 am.

Locals alarmed the police who later called out personnel of the state police bomb disposal squad and defused and destroyed safely at the spot averting majority tragedy that could have occurred if trigger.

Police believed the bomb being planted by rebels with a view to attack security forces taking the road.

CRPF and Assam Rifles posts are located in Lamphel area and they moved to and fro on the road where the IED was planted.

Yet in another incident, a failed attack was performed at the house of a member of Pangaltabi Gram Panchayat in interior Thoubal district last night.

The bomb hurled at the house of the member Ningthoujam Nando of Tangjengkhunou failed to explode.

Police seized the Chinese made hand grenade from the house this morning.

Decrying the attack on the house of the gram panchayat member, villagers staged a sit-in protest in the village today starting from 10 am and went on till 3 pm.

They alleged the bomb threat being carried out by undergrounds for failing to siphon off fund released by the government for developmental works of the village.
