Army accused of firing

Imphal, February 12 2009: Farmers of Bishnupur Kha ward no 5 and ward no 6 escaped narrowly when they were fired upon in discriminately by army personnel on patrol duly.

The incident look place at Chinikon village in Bishnupur district when the farmers went there to fetch water at about 11.30 pm yesterday.

According to a press release issued by the Bishnupur Municipal Chairperson Y Bidyapati Devi, the farmers were going to fetch water for their vegetable farms as they did not get water in day time following the long dry spell.

However, just as the farmers reached the bailey bridge built in the village, they were fired upon indiscriminately.

Fortunately, there was no casualty because of the firing.

Asserting that firing upon the villagers who have been toiling for their livelihoods by security personnel without asking any question was a blatant act of human rights violation.

the Chairperson conveyed the appeal of the people of Bishnupur Kha to avoid recurrence of such incidents in future.

The Chairperson also appealed to the authority concerned to address the problem of water scarcity in the surrounding area of Bishnupur Kha.
