Locals block NH-53 over killing of youth

Imphal, February 09 2009: With the establishment of the identities of the two youths gunned down by a combined team of Imphal west police commandos and troops of 12 Marath Li last night at Ngairakpam village under Patsoi police station, Imphal west today, residents of Luker where they hail from blocked the traffic on the NH-39 claiming that the youths were not members of any underground organizations.

The two slain youths were identified today as Naorem Bobo (21) son of Sheityajit of Luker Mayai Leikai and Ningombam Niranjoy (22) son of N Tomba of Luker Maning Leikai.

Residents took to the streets along the NH-53 at Patsoi Lamkhai and blocked the traffic was disturbed today as residents of Patsoi area in Imphal west protested against killing of two youths of the locality by the security claiming that they were innocents and not related with any underground groups.

The locals also formed a JAC against the killing and demanded to award punishment to the security personnel behind the killing of the two youths.

They also demand judicial enquiry and finds the facts and circumstances resulting to the shooting to dead of them.

They took to the street at Patsoi Patsoi Lamkhai for a brief period of time and later submitted a memorandum to the chief minister urging him to fulfill their demands.

According to the locals, Bobo was a salesman at a dry fish shop at Nagamapal and had been served for the last three years while Niranjan was labour engaging in the constructions of houses.

They went out from home yesterday afternoon at around 2 pm to buy a motorcycle for Bobo to a motorcycle of the locality.

Bobo carried Rs 23,000 (Rs 3000 from home and Rs 20,000 taken from his local brother Dijen) for buying motorcycle, the locals said.

When the family attempted to contact him over his phone after they could hear sounds of gun firing nearby the locality yesterday evening at around 6.40 pm but his mobile phone was switch off.

While the families were in the midst of worry, a policeman hailing from the locality informed that they were killed by the security forces in an encounter.

Locals of the Ngairakpam also said that yesterday at around 3.30 pm, a commando vehicle and an Army vehicle were seen following the motorcycle (Pulser MN-05/2080) which Bobo and Niranjan are going together.

The families with the support of the local people also decided not to receive the dead bodies till justice is bring about in the killing of the two youths.

The dead bodies are lying unclaimed at RIMS morgue.
