Imphal, July 08 2009: The case of killing of Prof Md Islamuddin of Manipur University has been handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) today.

Reliable sources said, the Manipur Police officially handed over the case to a team of CBI led by an SP from Delhi, at present camping in Imphal, today.

What is noteworthy about the handing over of the case today, according to the sources, is that immediately after the CBI accepted the case, the team visited the MU campus where the killing occurred and started making inquiry.

It may be worth mentioning here that the Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Imphal West district police was the Investigating Officer (IO) of the case as per Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Amendment Act, 2004 .

As soon as the case was handed over to them, the CBI team registered a case of their own and conducted preliminary inquiry by visiting the spot of occurrence.

It may be recalled here that police had arrested 16 persons including students in connection with the murder of Prof Islamuddin.

However, eight students had been released on bail by a court, and another eight persons have been booked under National Security Act (NSA).

An interesting twist to the whole incident is that one IRB rifleman had voluntarily surrendered to the police admitting that he had helped the assailants escape from the scene of crime.
